New year, new you! It’s what we always hear from people every year. New year, new resolutions and the same results at the end of the year. How can we make 2018 different from all the other years we had?
“A worthwhile existence means that one’s life has profound meaning”.
People view success as something that is measurable, an amount in your bank, the weight on your scale, the number of cars in your garage, how big your house is and even the number of times you traveled in a year. This is how most of us measure success. We look at the highlight reels of our friends on Facebook or the curated Instagrams of people we don’t know but admire, then we feel like crap and we think that we are falling behind.
This year, for us to have an epic year, reflect on what brings meaning into your life. Stop the comparison and focus on YOU.
People live their lives for a variety of goals and ideals. These goals should have a deeper meaning for us and not because we just want to impress others. Because the only way you can truly be happy and have a meaningful life is by doing the things that have significant value for you. Does it feed your soul? Did the experience make you a better person? Did it challenge you and took you out of your comfort zone? Did it make a difference in another person’s life?
We can travel every month to all these popular places and stay in expensive resorts and still come back home feeling depleted. We can eat at fancy restaurants and drink at the most popular bars and still feel like shit. Why? Because there are no deeper meaning or purpose in these activities. Fancy resorts, popular destinations and new restaurants are superficial experiences that rarely have significant impacts in our lives. It brings disappointments when we go back to “reality” – the mundane home and work life.
But if we put more meaning and purpose into the experiences that we are going to do for 2018 then we may have a totally different perspective about traveling, goals or “hanging out”. In every decisions that we will make; in every travel that we will plan; in every appointment or engagement that we will arrange; let’s ask ourselves these questions:
- What is my purpose of doing this?
- Will this activity make me a better person?
- Will this experience change my life or way of thinking?
- What kind of impact will I make?
- Will this plan make others happy?
- Will I be making a difference in someone’s life?
- Will this make a difference in my life?
- Why am I doing this?
- Will my life be meaningful after this experience?
Meaningful means full of significance or value. To lead a meaningful life means to feel that ones life is worthwhile, valuable or significant. To make 2018 an epic year, we need to be purposeful on the plans that we make and the activities we desire to do. True happiness lies in leading life that is both meaningful and worthwhile.
“People always try to enjoy life by finding a meaning or purpose to it and seeking to have some sort of effect on the world around them. In a sense, being human means to want to lead a meaningful life.” – Why Is Faith Necessary Vol 1
